Rope Wall Yoga
Rope Wall Yoga or “Yoga Kurunta” utilizes a series of ropes and sometimes slings that are attached to a wall in different ways to be used as a yoga prop. Yoga Teacher BKS Iyengar popularized the rope wall method of practice, but it’s centuries old and can be seen in many illustrations where the practitioner utilizes a tree branch that serves as the basis for rather exotic inverted poses. Yoga on the wall with ropes offers new opportunities to become more aware of the body and every separate part of it. Asana can be performed in a more precise and effective manner by loading only the muscles involved. The Yoga Wall helps more advanced practitioners access deeper postures by utilizing ropes as a kind of prop while simultaneously enabling those with injuries or physical limitations to perform asanas that could not be accessed otherwise. One can completely relax in inverted postures utilizing a full yogic breath, relieving pressure on the spinal cord and increasing intervertebral disk space. The Rope Wall method of yoga helps to strengthen and tone the body, increases flexibility and reduces stress by helping to access the parasympathetic nervous system with the constant support of the ropes and wall allowing the practitioner to access deep relaxation.
